Salzburg Festival

"Every art needs two: one who makes it  and one who needs it".

In the summer of 1914, i.e.exactly one hunred years ago, the European nations plunged into a war which we today understand as the "primal catastrophe" of recent history.The Salzburg Festival's existence and the events at that time are inextricably linked with each other, as the Festival founders regarded their initiative as a necessary "peace-building project".

That is why the drama programme of the Festival is dedicated to World War I, which began so fatefully in July and August 1914 and has characterised our destiny to this very day. Karl Kraus" "Die letzten Tage der Menschheit" (the Last Days of Mankind), a co-production with Vienna's Burgtheater at the Landestheater (Salzburg State Theatre), will be the centre of attraction. In more than 200 scenes originating from the period 1915 to 1922 and published, for the most part, in Krau's journal "Die Fackel", Kraus shrewdly and caustically unmasked the war and, as a lonely critic and chronicler, drew the portrait of a world derailed. At the Perner Insel, Andreas Kriegenburg stages Oedön von Horvath's post-war play Don Juan kommt aus dem Krieg (Don Juan Returns from War) and Katie Mitchell, famous for her brilliant combination of cinematic and theatrical techniques, will show her project The forbidden Zone there. Der Golem (The Golem), based on motifs of the fantastic novel by Gustav Meyrink, will be staged at the Landestheater. The English drama group 1927 will dramatize the novel published in 1914, creating a modern version of this ancient Jewish legend. It goes without saying that Conelius Obonya and Brigitte Hobmeier will return to Domplatz (Cathedral Square) for the euphorically acclaimed staging of Jedermann (Everyman).

This summer?s opera programmme opens with a new production of Don Giovanni.

Sven-Eric-Bechtolf and Christoph Eschenbach will contine their Mozart/Da-Ponte cycle that started with Cosi fan tutte in  2013. The focus of the opera programme will be the world premiere of Charlotte Salomon, a commissioned work composed by Marc.André Dalbavie, who will also be the conductor in the production by Luc Bondy. The work ist absolut the Jewish female painter and poet of the same name, who was murdered in Auschwitz. This work also takes a critical look at the ideological, political, military and humanitarian disasters of the first half of the 20th century. With Fierrabras, an opera by Fanz Schubert will be presented at the Festival for the first time. Rossini's La Cenerentola, Verdi's Il trovatore, a concert production of Donizetti's La Favorite and Projekt Tristan und  Isolde (The Tristan and Isolde Project) complete the programme.
